From the global to the local: organised crime in Ciudad de México. Patterns andperspectivess

The article addresses the dynamics of organised crime in Ciudad de México, particularly the illegal drug market, and projects its mediumterm behaviour using autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA) models. In recent years, although indicators of high impact crime have declined, the perception of insecurity and the presence of organised crime remain a concern. The study seeks to understand this disharmony between data and public perception by focusing its analysis on the prognosis of drug dealing cases. The data analysed comes from two sources: the investigation files of the Attorney General’s Office (AGO) and the records of the Command, Control, Computers, Communications and Citizen Contact Centre (C5) of Ciudad de México, covering the period 2016- 2024. By fitting two ARIMA models, the behaviour of drug dealing is projected until December 2027. Despite the security policies implemented, the forecast shows that, although cases will not increase exponentially, they will remain at high levels compared to the years leading up to 2020. This may be due to the structural configuration of organised crime in the city, which combines violence and corruption. The study highlights the importance of applying predictive models in Latin American contexts and points to the need to improve the quality of crime data in order to make more accurate projections and formulate more effective public policies.
