Abstract

The literature around the "fear of crime" category is reviewed with the objective of understanding the association between crime and the media. The methodology was focused on reviewing the fear of crime thematic, and results were obtained in the three trends being identified: fear to crime associated to media coverage; fear to crime, risk perception and victimization, and studies about crime, the press, and the different views in Hispano America. A stance is adopted on two theses: first, that fear of crime is a negative effect from the media, and what fear of crime, risk perception and victimization have in common is the fact that crime is a threat against survival. It concludes with an invitation to make progress on the path of the media's social responsibility and the integration of the above mentioned models and approaches.
